Travelling with animals
If you are a New Zealander planning to travel overseas with an animal and bring it back home, you'll need to meet both export and import requirements. Before you go, it's important to check you can bring your animal back into New Zealand from the destination country.
Requirements when travelling with animals
If you are planning to travel overseas with an animal and bring it back to New Zealand, you'll need to meet both the:
- export requirements for the destination country
- import requirements for New Zealand.
We recommend you contact MPI to clarify the requirements for your animal.
Start planning well before you go, some requirements take 2 months or more to arrange.
Taking an animal to another country
The requirements you need to meet vary depending on where you're going and the type of animal you're taking.
MPI has step-by-step exporting guides for different types of animals. Find out how to export:
Bringing an animal back into New Zealand
Follow our step-by-step guide for importing:
Check you can bring your animal back into New Zealand
Even if it's originally from here, your animal can only be brought into New Zealand from an approved country. Check the Import Health Standard (IHS) for your animal type to make sure the country you're visiting is approved.
Get an import permit before you go
You'll need an import permit to bring your animal back into New Zealand. If you're only going for a few weeks, arrange the permit before you leave New Zealand. Depending on the type of animal, applications need to be submitted up to 6 weeks before import. The step-by-step process for importing your animal explains how to apply.
