The fisheries taking flatfish in FLA 2 were analysed from 1989¬-90 to 2015-16 using commercial catch and effort data. The FLA 2 fishery is largely concentrated around the port of Napier. Sand flounder and New Zealand sole are the dominant flatfish species caught. The accepted CPUE index using daily aggregated data for combined flatfish species shows cyclic fluctuations in abundance, with indices for New Zealand sole and sand flounder showing similar trends to the aggregate series.
FAR 2018/03 – Catch-at-age of snapper in SNA 7 in the 2016–17 fishing year
Twenty-seven SNA and FLA target bottom trawl landings were sampled within statistical areas 37/38 (Tasman Bay/Golden Bay) of the SNA 7 Fishery Management Area from November 2016 to March 2017. A total of 1000 otoliths were selected for aging under a random age frequency sampling design. Bottom trawl landings were dominated by the 2011 and 2008 year classes (6 and 9 year olds), with the 2013 year class (4 year olds) also of moderate strength. The mean weighted coefficient of variation was 19%.

Research on black petrel at Little Barrier and Great Barrier Island in the 2016/17 breeding season followed 448 black petrel study burrows; of these 65% were occupied by breeding pairs and breeding success was 68%. Annually adult survival was 95%. Passive acoustic monitoring confirmed black petrels are concentrated within the summit ridges on Little Barrier Island and the Mt Hobson area on Great Barrier Island. Satellite GPS devices tracked 3 fledglings following an eastward migration route.
