MPI is proud to once again support the Ahuwhenua Trophy BNZ Māori Excellence in Farming Award.
The award acknowledges and celebrates Māori excellence in farming and the significant role Māori play in New Zealand's primary industries.
The competition is held annually, alternating each year between 'dairy' and 'sheep and beef'. The 2018 competition is for Māori dairy farmers.
Finalists were announced on 22 February 2018 and the winner's trophy will be awarded at Wigram Air Force Museum in Christchurch on 25 May 2018.
MPI is a sponsor of the Living Wood Fair – a celebration of wood with demonstrations, workshops, presentations, and exhibits. Topics will include sustainable land use, planting and using alternative timber species, and forestry.
MPI is hosting a stand, as well as presenting information on sustainable forest management options, indigenous timber milling regulations, indigenous forestry, the emissions trading scheme, afforestation grant scheme, and the billion trees programme.
The Living Wood Fair is being held on the 21 and 22 April, in Takaka, Golden Bay.
MPI is proud to sponsor the New Zealand Association for Environmental Education (NZAEE) 9th Biennial Conference: An Ecosystem for Environmental Education - He Pūnaha Hauropi mō te mātauranga a taiao.
NZAEE is a national, independent voice for environmental education. The conference supports engagement in environmental actions – aligning with MPI's aim to have all New Zealanders engaged in biosecurity. It attracts a wide cross-section of people involved in education from many sectors.
The conference is being held from 18 to 20 April 2018 at Wellington Girls' College, Wellington.
The East Coast Farming Expo involved 2 days of exhibits and seminars, providing an opportunity for East Coast and Hawke's Bay farming communities to interact with industry. MPI was a sponsor of the event as part of its on-going work in the region. Ministry staff were available at the expo to talk to.
The East Coast Farming Expo was held at the Wairoa Agricultural and Pastoral Society Showgrounds from 11 to 12 April 2018.
MPI is a sponsor and programme partner of the Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme, which is run by the New Zealand Rural Leadership Trust. The programme works at developing leaders for rural and agri-food sectors. Its main focus is on building leadership ability, confidence, and critical thinking skills, and on understanding economic, environmental, and industry contexts.
The programme is run 2 times each year - starting in January and June. Application dates are available on the programme's website.
MPI has sponsored Doug Avery, a well-known New Zealand farmer, to trial a series of short videos. The videos will share Doug’s experiences with getting through tough times, and encourage farmers to adopt new farm management practices. They’ll promote resilience, and encourage farmers to prepare for future agriculture challenges. These are presented under Doug’s brand, Resilient Farmer.
